Abstract
Air pollution source caused by increasing road traffic reduce air quality and affect people in urban areas. In order to improve living condition in urban areas, predications of effects on air pollution are needed for assessing exposures as part of epidemiological studies, and to inform urban air-quality policy and traffic management. In the current study; the spatial and diurnal variation of carbon monoxide (CO) pollution concentration level of Uyo urban was investigated using GIS based options (Carbon Monoxide,) was sampled in Twenty one location points. Samples were taken at three different time intervals of the day corresponding to morning peak, evening peak and afternoon offpeak periods for five days per week. Data on dependent variables relating traffic emissions and independent variables namely: traffic volume morning afternoon and evening. The diurnal average concentration of the (CO) was observed to be 8-18 ppm whereas morning, afternoon and evening peak ranged from 2-8, 1-5 and 3-8 respectively. Data were analyzed using simple regression, Statistical analysis showed the significant peak effect on mean difference of Co concentration. Morning Peak and evening peak concentration of ambient CO, were observed to be higher than off-peak suggesting longer residence times of these pollutants in the atmosphere due to stagnant conditions and low mixing height. Spatial distribution of pollutants throughout the study area in both the peak and off peak for the five days were represented by GIS Model. On the basis of Air Quality Index (AQI), GIS based air pollution surface models were generated by means of Inverse Distance Interpolation technique. From the output surface model it was found that there was a significant increase in carbonmodixide (Co) concentration in the core neighbourhood during peak periods across the area. From these research analyses, some policy recommendations are made. The first major policy recommendation is improved road network. The  second major recommendation is a vehicle emission control technologies policy and construction of modern roundabouts could help to reduce peak period traffic in the nearest future.
