This study took a cursory look at the state of the Nigerian economy and the contributions of housing to its development using secondary sources of data. It established that Nigeria is backward economically as the nation is characterized by low per capita income, unemployment, housing deficit of unprecedented magnitude. In addition, the information from these sources revealed poor performance of mortgage banks, dependent development, lack of secured access to land, high construction cost, slow bureaucratic procedures, lack of critical infrastructures in urban and rural areas of the country among other things as the inhibitions to effective housing delivery in Nigeria and by implication depriving the nation of the attendant economic gains. It finally provided the panacea and made the necessary recommendations.
