This study analyzed the problems imposed by embattled invasion of Typha species (an aquatic weed-cat tail) along wetlands of Hadejia Valley Irrigation Project (HVIP) on the Hadejia Jama’are River Basin. It was observed that the weed is posing a serious threat to livelihood of the farming communities in the area. It had invaded and colonized water canals, irrigated farm lands, grazing lands, ponds, river channels and reservoirs causing blockages and siltation there by shortening bore drains, reducing water quality, flow rates and irrigation intensity. It thought to have been providing protection cover to dangerous animals and nesting quellier birds that devour tons of food grains in the irrigation and downstream area. Different control measures were reported to have been used by the farmers to reduce the menace of  the weed. It is concluded that although the weed was posing menace to socio-economic and ecological condition of the area, however the cattail plant parts were found to be utilized by locals in many ways. Therefore, it is recommended that an urgent action should be taken by the Government through the management of HJRBDA and in collaboration with the farmers’ organizations to fully exploit the usefulness of the weed and reduces its menace.
