Hypertension is one of the leading causes of death in the world today. It is prevalent in adults and endemic in the older adult population. Hypertension is a major contributor to cardiovascular morbidity and disability. This study appraised the knowledge, attitude and life style practices of hypertensive patients in University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital Maiduguri, Borno State Nigeria. A questionnaire was used to collect data from 128 respondents. It was observed that though the individuals in the study had adequate knowledge about hypertension, and good approach towards lifestyle modification, their attitude as regards the management of hypertension was observed to be relatively poor. Most of the respondents check their blood pressure only occasionally, do not keep regular hospital appointments, take drugs only when symptoms present, and often combine orthodox with traditional medicine. It was therefore recommended that individuals should visit hospitals and health centers regularly to have their blood pressure checked. Those that are already down with hypertension should adhere strictly not just to treatment regimen but also other life style modifications such as low salt intake, regular exercise, avoiding food rich in fats among others in order to prevent the complications of hypertension.
