Abstract


A study was conducted on the comparative analysis of total hardness and microbial activity of water stored in plastic and clay pot container. The total hardness was determined using simple EDTA titration method. The microbial activities were analysed using plate count (culture) techniques with each of the groups of container used were closed while others opened. The result revealed that the opened plastic containers formed the total hardness of 200mg/L and 4.2x104 CFU/Cm3 respectively, in the clay pot container the total hardness in the opened container is 150mg/L and 2.9x104 cfu/cm3 is the microbial colony counted while in the closed container the  total hardness is 142mg/L and 1.1x104 cfu/cm3 is the microbial colony counted. The result showed that plastic containers have the highest total hardness and microbial activity as compared to the clay pot containers. recommended to be used for children with calcium deficiency for development of teeth and bones. The clay pot container which formed less total hardness and microbial activity should be used for normal house hold consumption such as drinking, washing, cooking and bathing.
